Scary Skincare You NEED to Avoid!

Ghost these scary skincare trends ASAP!

Nothing is spookier than a shoddy skincare trend.  Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps! Pore strips, DIY acne remedies, stripped skin — yikes! Keep reading for 6 frightening trends you need to ghost ASAP… if you dare!

Microbead Cleansers

Many facial cleansers contain small plastic beads that are supposed to help exfoliate the skin and clear any leftover dirt and makeup.  While this sounds great and all, these cleansers are extremely harsh on the skin.  Physical exfoliants should be used a few times a week at the most, not every morning and night! In addition, microbeads are rough on the skin and can strip the skin of its natural oils.  The skin combats this by producing more oil which can lead to acne and premature aging.  Again, yikes

Not sure if your cleanser has microbeads? Check to see if there are tiny particles floating in the liquid.  Those particles are most likely plastic beads. If your face wash feels more like a sugar scrub than a cleanser, that is also a sign.  Lastly, look for Polypropylene or Polyethylene on the ingredients label.  These indicate the presence of microbeads.

Toothpaste on Acne

I’m not sure where this trend came from but it needs to go! Toothpaste commonly includes drying ingredients such as baking soda, alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide.  While these may help shrink a zit, they are especially drying and irritating.  On top of that, they don't do anything to actually kill the acne-causing bacteria. Use a low percentage benzoyl peroxide cream or zit sticker instead!

Pore Strips

Pore strips literally do just what they say strip the skin of oils that don't need to be stripped! They also tend to be very sticky and can cause irritation, redness, and even small tears in the skin if not removed correctly or if left on too long.  Pore strips give me way too much bad juju. If you feel the need to clear those pesky pores, use a comedone extractor, not pore strips!

Pore Vacuum

Pore vacuums (when not used by a professional) are a dermatologist’s worst nightmare.  If not used correctly, pore vacuums can burst the small capillaries that live just under the surface of the skin.  This causes prolonged redness and sometimes even bruising.  Leave this one to the professionals, please!

Makeup Wipes

If you haven't ditched makeup wipes by now, girl where have you been? Makeup wipes contain chemicals that are way too harsh for the skin.  They also throw off the pH balance of the complexion which hinders its ability to keep dirt and particles out of the pores. Lastly, this seems like a common theme makeup wipes strip all the natural oils from the surface, resulting in dry, irritated skin. Yikes!

Instead, use warm water and a makeup remover to take off your makeup.  Then, use a gentle cleanser followed by a moisturizer.

Facial Cleansing Spin Brush

If they don't already, these spinning face brushes should scare you! They are much too abrasive for the skin and need to be cancelled ASAP! Remember, if you want smooth, soft skin you need to treat it like it is smooth and soft! It’s your complexion, not bathroom tile! There’s no need to use power tools to clean it!
